Bel Air

Bel Air, MD – William H. Jones, Jr., affectionately known as Bill, Biker Billy, or Whizzer, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, at the age of 92. As Bill himself might have said, "I bought the farm." Born on May 17, 1933, in Utica, NY, to the late William H. Jones, Sr., and Grace Ferry Jones, Bill's early life was marked by resilience and determination. At the tender age of 7, following the loss of his mother to cancer, he and his father relocated to Clark Mills, NY, a modest factory town where he was raised. Bill graduated from Clinton Central School in 1950, with a well-rounded education and a deep interest for sports and music that would endure throughout his life.

In 1952, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy, serving honorably for four years as a 2nd Class Radio Operator aboard the USS Carter Hall LSD3 during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge in 1956, he reunited with his childhood sweetheart and true love, Carol Marie Moran, whom he had known since they were both seven years old. The couple married on June 29, 1957, embarking on a devoted partnership that spanned 68 years as of June 29, 2025. Bill often joked that "20 of them were good," a testament to his enduring humor and deep affection for Carol.

While building their family, Bill pursued higher education at Utica College of Syracuse University, graduating in 1961. This marked the beginning of a rewarding journey filled with relocations and opportunities. After several moves, Bill, Carol, and their growing family settled in Bel Air, MD, in 1969, where they found a permanent home and community.

After settling into their new community, Bill made it his mission to ensure his sons could continue playing the sport they loved—soccer. At the time, there were no local programs in Bel Air, but that didn’t stop Bill. As a founding member of the Bel Air Soccer program, Bill became a driving force behind its creation. Every Saturday morning in the fall, he could be found lining the lone soccer field at Southampton Middle School, the only one not reserved for football. Years later, when his youngest daughter expressed an interest in playing soccer, Bill once again acted. Determined to provide the same opportunities for her, he helped launch the Bel Air Girls Soccer program, expanding access and inclusion in the sport he believed in. He served as its inaugural commissioner while also coaching numerous soccer, basketball, and baseball teams through the years. His leadership extended to the Bel Air Lions Club, where he was a member for 25 years and president in 1978; multiple PTA presidencies at Wakefield/Homestead Elementary, Southampton Middle, and Bel Air High School; and the presidency of the Bel Air High School Boosters Club from 1988 to 1989. A steadfast member of American Legion Post #39 for 55 years, Bill earned the nickname "Biker Billy" after memorably riding his 50cc scooter to Rehoboth Beach at age 78—a long, slow ride to remember.

Bill's professional career encompassed roles in both the private and public sectors, culminating in the co-founding of A-1 SuperSeal, Inc., in 1986. This venture provided Bill with a flexible retirement, allowing him to stay active on his own terms. As he frequently reflected, "Life has been good."

Bill and Carol cherished traveling together and, over the years, explored all 50 states. Whether visiting loved ones, attending the annual reunions of the USS Carter Hall (LSD), where Bill proudly served as treasurer for several years, or simply enjoying the beauty of the United States, they found great joy in every journey. Traveling side by side was one of their greatest joys.

Bill was the devoted and proud father of seven children: Michael (Mary), Mark (June), Maureen Eller (Lynn), Matthew (Judy), Kathy Lynn Brock (John), all residing in Harford County; Marty of Easton, PA; and Patrick (Molly) of Prosper, TX. He took immense pride in his 14 grandchildren—Zack Noyes, Sarah, Ryan, Emily, Shannon, Connor, Quinn, Declan Jones, Laura Passas, Lisa Eller, and Noah, William Fitzpatrick, Alexandra, and Jade Brock—and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-sister, Patricia Culbertson, of Clark Mills, NY.

In keeping with Bill's wishes, there will be no viewing hours. Instead, he encourages friends and family to visit their place of worship and offer a prayer for his soul. He would appreciate the prayers. A Celebration of Life will be held at American Legion Post #39 in the fall.
