Walter Jenkins, Sr.

August 29, 1939 — May 22, 2025

Edgewood

Walter Jenkins Sr., age 85, of Edgewood, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Born in Forkland, Alabama, he was the son of the late John Walter Jenkins and Carrie (Smith) Jenkins. Walter was a devoted husband to Bernice (Coleman) Jenkins.

They were married on October 24, 1959, and would have celebrated 66 years of marriage this year. In 1975, Walter and Bernice were baptized together at Laurel Park Racetrack, beginning their lifelong journey of service to Jehovah. A loyal and faithful brother, Walter served as an elder in several congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Alongside Bernice, he had a deep love for the ministry and was passionate about helping others come to know and love Jehovah.

Walter had a special talent for connecting with people and was admired for his warmth, joyful personality, and ever-present smile. He served as a shepherd to many until recently stepping back to become the full-time caregiver for his beloved wife. Known affectionately as “Papa Jenkins,” he made everyone feel welcome wherever he went and was rarely seen without a friendly conversation or a laugh to share.

He had a well-known sweet tooth and a lifelong passion for sports, especially for the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles—fandom he enjoyed sharing with his son Walter Jr., grandson Walter III, and daughters Melinda, Gwen, and Zina.

Above all, Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a spiritual father to many. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, laughter, and unwavering support.

He is survived by his loving wife Bernice Jenkins; his children Melinda Crow, Gwendolyn McMillion, Zina Miguel, and Walter Jenkins Jr.; his grandchildren Walter Jenkins III, Shanay Jones, Shanell Jones, Shana Jones, Stephen Crow, Timothy Crow, Shawn Smith, and Destiny Love Jenkins; and eleven cherished great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Charlie Jenkins, John Croxton, and Ennis Clantan; his sons-in-law Arthur Crow, Brian Miguel, and Walter McMillion; his daughter-in-law Nikelle Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Carrie Jenkins; his siblings James Jenkins, John Jenkins, George Jenkins, and his only sister, Carrie Mae Jenkins.

Walter will be remembered for his big heart, his deep love for Jehovah, his devotion to family and friends, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed, and we look forward to seeing him again in paradise, just as Jehovah has promised.
