Obituary

Vito Francis Leanza, 96, of Forest Hill, Maryland, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff at Amazing Grace Assisted Living. Born on December 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Gabriele “Fred” and Anna (Fodera) Leanza.

A native of Staten Island, Vito attended Curtis High School before joining the United States Army. He bravely served in the Korean War from 1951-1953. Upon returning home, he utilized the GI bill to attend Wagner College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business in 1960. During and after his college years, he formed, directed, and played the drums for his own band, called Red Leanza. His rhythm and leadership brought life to countless gatherings, creating lasting memories for all who danced to his beat.

Vito was a devout Catholic, an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and an usher at church. Above all else, Vito’s greatest joy was his family. He was incredibly involved with his daughter’s activities and spent countless weekends and evenings driving them to violin lessons and performances all over the East coast. He loved watching the NY Yankees and rarely missed a game, especially when cheering on his favorite player, Aaron Judge. He was also a well-known dessert lover and famously believed that no meal was truly complete without piece of dark chocolate! His warmth, dedication and sweet nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Vito is survived by his daughters, Judith Steinmeyer (David), Linda Leanza (fiancé Alan Cassedy), and Janet Kouten (Joseph); his grandchildren, Alejandro Molina, Monica Molina Lopez (Danilo), Ashley Coughlin (John), Emily Kouten, and Adrianne Adams; and his great-grandchildren, Agustin Lopez, Gianlucca Lopez, Miles Steinmeyer, and Chabi Steinmeyer. He is also survived by his dear sisters Anna Edwards and Rosemarie Kaminski.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Anna Carol (Iacampo) Leanza, and his sisters Fannie Cappiello and Theresa Benedetto. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many friends, relatives, and caregivers who lovingly supported Vito throughout the years.
