IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Virginia Wherry
Akers
May 21, 1928 – September 4, 2025
After 97 years on earth, Virginia Wherry Akers moved on to join her sisters (Donna Mildred Overton and Norma Jean Scott) and parents (Agnes Schroeder and John Wherry) earlier this year. Born in Adaza, Iowa, she graduated from high school in Churdan, IA, then attended Iowa State College before moving to Miami, FL to work for Eastern Airlines. While with Eastern, she lived in New York and Chicago and advanced to regional manager. Virginia also had successful careers in marketing with Airline Textile, in finance for WR Grace Davison Chemical Division and several multi-year retirement jobs, working until she was 85. A Bel Air resident since 1973, Virginia lived in the Broadway Townhouses, Howard Park and, since 2019, Amazing Grace Assisted Living. She enjoyed sewing, cross stitch, gardening, reading, volunteering for a variety of community organizations and was a member of Bel Air United Methodist Church. Virginia was intuitive, kind, independent, resourceful and determined to the end. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Barnes and her husband Robert, nephews Shane and Jon Scott and nieces Julie Cole and Kristie Gardner. A memorial service will be held the summer of 2026 in her home state of Iowa.
