Thomas Dale Watson, age 81, of Darlington, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home, with family by his side, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. Born in Colora, Maryland, he was the son of the late Bledsue George Watson and Ester Halie (Anderson) Watson.
Known to most as Tom, he was the beloved husband of 62 years to Barbara Lee Watson (née Harvey), his high school sweetheart. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life centered entirely around those he loved. His warm heart, kind spirit, and wicked sense of humor were cherished by all who knew him.
The youngest of five children, he spent his early childhood in the mountains of North Carolina with his grandparents living next door. He spent many days exploring along “the scenic” as the Blue Ridge Parkway was known and developed a deep appreciation for the vistas that are part of his family roots. He is a descendant of the Brinegar family that built Brinegar Cabin, now an historical resource of the National Park Service dedicated to teaching about Appalachian farm life in the 19th century.
He learned early the value of hard work and family. He was still a teenager when he began working at Chrysler in Newark, Delaware, and later joined the underground utility company founded by family. He was respected by county officials and developers alike, and his dedication and tireless work ethic left a lasting impact on those around him.
Tom enjoyed spending time with friends and staying active. He was an avid tennis player for many years before taking up golf and, most recently, water volleyball. He had a lovely singing voice and could often be heard reprising tunes from his youth, even in his final weeks. His endless sense of humor brought joy to his family, and his signature smile will never be forgotten.
His favorite retreat was his back deck, where he found peace watching birds, squirrels, and other nature – animals seemed naturally drawn to his calm presence. He and Barbara shared many adventures, including horseback riding together on trails when younger and traveling abroad to England, Ireland, and Scotland in later years.
Above all else, Tom was a family man with a generous spirit. He loved being “Pop-Pop” to his five grandchildren, with whom he shared countless special moments.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Watson; daughters Tammy Murphy (Chris Murphy) and Teresa Watson (Ken Widom); grandchildren Nathalie Murphy, Joseph Murphy, Haley Widom, Kelsey Widom, and Michael Widom; several nieces and nephews; and a sister, Myrtle Slade.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bledsue and Ester Watson; sisters Leona Hendrix and Naomi White; and brother Clifton Watson.
