Obituary

Thomas Melvin Carter, age 82, of Joppa, Maryland, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Tom was the beloved son of the late Melvin Thomas Carter and Adele (Soistman) Carter.

Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A devoted husband and father, he cherished his family deeply and treasured the time spent with those he loved.

Tom was a Bookbinder by trade and plant manager of Superior Binding until he retired. Then he opened his own business.

For several years, Tom was the owner and operator of Carter's Collectibles, located in the Joppatowne flea market. An avid collector, he had a passion for antiques of all kinds and enjoyed the history and stories behind the many treasures he collected over the years.

Tom was a devoted Baltimore sports fan who enjoyed cheering on the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. He also loved listening to old-time rock 'n' roll music. A true dog lover, Tom, had a special place in his heart for his beloved pugs, especially "Gus."

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Lynn (Peary) Carter; son, Thomas Melvin Carter III “Tommy”; sister, Joyce Ross and husband Jim; sisters-in-law, Shirley Richards, wife of the late George Richards, and Rebecca Price and husband, Kenny; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by their loving son, Jason Wayne Carter.
