Obituary

Sharon Marie Walters (née Coffey), 82, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away on March 29, 2026.

Born on December 7, 1943 to Ruth and Walter Coffey, she was raised in Dolton, Illinois, with her older brother Michael Coffey. Sharon carried her Chicago-area roots as a proud part of her identity throughout her life. She loved where she came from and spoke of it often, with the kind of spirit that made others feel connected to her stories. Sharon graduated from the Presbyterian-St. Lukes Hospital Nursing School in 1965 and was a dedicated nurse for over 40 years. She cared for so many people during her career, always with her combination of honesty, advocacy and genuine concern.

Sharon was an outgoing and spirited woman with a deep love for fun, friendship, and connection. She made friends wherever she went and had a gift for making people feel welcome. A lifelong practicing Catholic, Sharon’s faith was a steady foundation in her life. She was also proud of her Irish descent, and that pride in heritage and family was woven into the way she lived and loved.

Some of Sharon’s greatest joys were family, travel and nature. She loved planning trips as much as taking them, and her home reflected that joy—filled with memories of family and adventure. Her walls were always covered with carefully curated photographs and reminders of the people, places, and moments she cherished most.

Sharon enjoyed cooking and the joy that meals with others would bring. She was proud to be a provider for others, especially when it came to food. Likewise, she loved gardening, art and reading. She was happiest outdoors whether she was hiking, tending to her plants, swimming, or just relaxing with loved ones among the beauty of nature.

Sharon shared 58 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Bill. She is survived by her daughters, Kristin Ackerman (Jeff Ackerman) and Jill Walters; and by her grandchildren, Zoe Ackerman and Max Ackerman, who brought her immense pride and joy.

A mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Church 1450 Abingdon Rd. Abington, MD 21009 on Saturday April 25th at 11:00 AM.
