Havre de Grace

Roland Frederick Schwartz, Jr., age 78, of Havre de Grace, Maryland, passed away on May 14, 2024, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Roland Schwartz, Sr. and Helen (Van Horn) Detamore and the beloved husband of Mary Patricia (Klarman) Schwartz for over 50 years. Roland proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy.

Roland's life was marked by dedication, service, and selfless focus on family. After active duty in the U.S. Navy aboard aircraft carriers, he began his career as a Baltimore City Police Officer, serving with honor for six years. Following his commitment to public service, he embarked on a career in transportation as a truck driver. Roland's work ethic and determination then led him to a successful career spanning over 12 years as a newspaper route owner/carrier for the Baltimore Sun. His tireless 7-day workweeks as a route owner built a financial foundation for his family to succeed. Subsequently, Roland’s love for the open road brought him back to driving tractor-trailers, where he had pride in his impeccable safe-driving record until retirement. Roland’s tireless work ethic and loving nature set the example for the entire family.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Roland found joy in family and various leisure activities usually near bodies of water or sports fields. Roland's fondest memories were often made while watching his grandchildren play and grow. He cherished moments spent watching his kids and grandkids play sports. He was a breakfast lover and would man the griddle for every Easter brunch. He loved being near water and was a boat owner at times. You could always find a fishing rod in his truck on trips, as he was always ready to fish, or at least try to. He loved the beach, with one of Roland’s favorite vacation areas being the Outer Banks, NC where there have been many fun family vacations over the years. Upon retirement, he and his wife shared a passion for camping, particularly in the serene surroundings of Indian River Inlet in Delaware. Always on the hunt for land, Roland held a lifelong dream of owning waterfront property on the Eastern Shore, a testament to his love for the region's beauty and tranquility. As general contractor, he secured an expansive 5 acre property where he proudly built he and his wife’s custom home, that has been an epicenter for family gatherings for over 2 decades.

Roland will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his surviving family members. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Roland (Nancy) Schwartz; daughter, Christie Lynn (Brian) Collins; stepdaughter, Sandra Lee Fleet; sisters, Carol Garst and Ann Collins; grandchildren, Devin Fleet, Abigail Fleet, Ryleigh Collins, Kayla Collins, Ashlyn Collins, Braden Schwartz, and Evan Schwartz. He also leaves behind devoted friends, Robert & Phyllis Lyon, who shared in his joys such as camping.
