Robert Salvatore Ashburn, age 89, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Wesley Paul Ashburn and Margaret Cecelia (Weir) Ashburn.
Robert (Bob) was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always there for his family and friends, offering unwavering support and always putting their needs first. Not a day went by without him telling his beloved wife, Dorothy, how much he loved her.
During his teenage years, he was invited to join a Baltimore-based club known as The Ruby Club where Bob and Dorothy developed life-long friendships, sharing family events and fun vacations together, especially in Ocean City. He was always a gentleman who showed kindness to everyone he met.
A true outdoorsman, Bob found joy in nature, especially in the woods and at the ocean. He was a champion archer, enjoyed hunting, and was an avid fisherman, always eager for time spent on the water or just enjoying the beauty of nature. Bob had a passion for music and dancing with Dorothy. He proudly played the fife with the St. Andrew Fife and Drum Corps, paving the way for his younger brother, Ken to join. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica.
A proud Baltimore sports enthusiast, Bob had a lifelong love for sports. He was a talented soccer player and cherished his time both playing and coaching soccer and girls’ softball. He was admired by those he coached and spent countless hours on the field, leading teams to victory. His dedication and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
As a young boy, Bob began his career in the printing industry by managing a local paper route. With an excellent eye for color and strong leadership skills, he advanced through the industry and held key positions with Lord Baltimore Press and GraphTec, most notably, Plant Manager and Vice President, Sales. He was committed to continuous learning and taking on new challenges. Alongside his wife, brother, and brother in-law, he co-owned and managed a successful gift shop, Decortage.
Bob is survived by his cherished wife, Dorothy Marie Ashburn (née Bysenhart); his daughter, Shirley Scott, and her husband, Aaron; his sons, Lawrence Ashburn and his wife, Sandra, and Gerald Ashburn and his wife, Kristen; his grandchildren, Lauren Scott, Cara Ashburn, and Nicholas Scott, and wife Sara; and his great-grandchildren, Lacey Scott and Amber Scott. He is also survived by his brother, Ken Ashburn, and wife, Deb; sisters-in-law Joyce Ruth, Ann Ashburn and Angela Ashburn; and bother-law Michael Evering.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Margaret Ashburn; his brothers, Wesley Ashburn and Richard Ashburn; his sister, Maryanna Evering; and brother-in-law Frank Ruth.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association.
