R. Bruce McCommons

December 13, 1942 — September 12, 2025

Richard “Bruce” McCommons, 82, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025.

Born on December 13, 1942, Bruce pursued a life defined by leadership and service. A proud Washington College graduate, he later earned his Master’s degree from The Catholic University of America, completing his studies while working full time. He devoted the majority of his career to the U.S. Army Human Engineering Laboratories (HEL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground. As a Human Factors Engineer, Bruce played a critical role in advancing research on human performance, hearing, and system safety for the U.S. Army. He authored and co-authored multiple technical papers and government reports, many of which became important references in the fields of acoustics, operator performance, and human–machine interaction. His work helped shape military research and laid the groundwork for future innovations in human factors engineering, leaving a legacy of scholarship and practical impact that extended well beyond his tenure.

On December 27, 1969, Bruce married the love of his life, Jean McCommons. Their 55-year marriage was filled with devotion, shared experiences, and unwavering support for one another.

Bruce’s passions extended beyond his career. A lifelong car enthusiast, he was an active member of the Mason Dixon chapter of the National Corvette Restorers Society and took great pride in fully restoring his own 1963 Chevrolet Corvette convertible—a project that reflected his patience, precision, and attention to detail. He also valued giving back to his community, frequently volunteering his time and talents. Those who knew him best will remember him as loyal, hardworking, and dedicated—a man who gave his best to every task and every relationship.

Above all, Bruce was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; his daughter, Jennifer Johnson; and his grandsons, Zachary Johnson and Nathan Johnson. His family will remember him as a source of wisdom, strength, and encouragement.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to The Salvation Army of Central Maryland in Bruce’s memory.

Bruce’s life and legacy will live on in the love of his family and the many lives he touched through his professional leadership, his volunteer service, and his steadfast loyalty and hard work.
