Obituary

Paul Jerome Boone, Sr., age 81, of Edgewood, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 8, 2026. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late William A. Boone, Sr. and Ruth (Swift) Boone.

Paul dedicated his life to public service, public safety, and caring for others. He proudly served with the Baltimore City Police Department for more than 30 years, spending his entire career assigned to the Central District. Beginning his career before the era of modern police radios, Paul was part of a generation of officers who knew their communities personally. He walked the beat, built relationships with the people he served, and embodied the principles of community policing long before the term became commonplace. His commitment, integrity, and willingness to help others earned him the respect of colleagues, neighbors, friends, and countless members of the public throughout his career.

Following his retirement from the Baltimore City Police Department, Paul continued his legacy of service through security positions at the Maryland Institute College of Art and later Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). He eventually retired to devote his time and attention to caring for his beloved wife, Ruth.

Paul’s love for Ruth Esther (Thomas) Boone was unwavering. He was devoted to her throughout their marriage and dedicated himself to her care during her final years. After Ruth’s passing, Paul passed away just two months later.

Known by many simply as ‘Superman,’ Paul was always ready to step in when someone needed help. To friends, and former colleagues, he was affectionately known as the legendary Paul Boone. To his nieces and nephews, he was “Uncle Jerry” and lovingly known as “Uncle Happy,” nicknames that reflected his warm personality and remarkable sense of humor. A gifted prankster, Paul delighted in keeping family and friends laughing and created memories that will be cherished for generations.

Outside of work, Paul had a lifelong passion for American classic cars, particularly muscle cars. Over the years, he proudly owned several Chevrolet Chevelle convertibles. One of his treasured Chevelles served as a support vehicle in parades for his children’s color guard and drum corps activities, combining two of his greatest joys—family and classic automobiles.

Paul was also a lover of music and proudly owned a classic jukebox that brought both music and memories into his home. Whether sharing favorite songs with family and friends or simply enjoying the music himself, it was one of the many things that brought him happiness throughout his life.

Despite his many accomplishments, Paul’s greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the light of his life. He was the calm presence family members could turn to for advice, understanding, encouragement, and unconditional love. Whether lending a helping hand, offering guidance, or simply listening, Paul made those around him feel valued and supported.

When time allowed, Paul enjoyed occasional casino getaways with his brother, opportunities to relax, share stories, and enjoy a well-earned break from his responsibilities, especially during his years as a devoted caregiver.

Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Esther (Thomas) Boone; his parents, William A. Boone, Sr. and Ruth Boone; his sisters, Nellie Peters, Evelyn Gartrell, and Marie Burns; and his brothers, William Boone, Jr., Walter Boone, Joe Boone, and Tom Boone.

He is survived by his loving children, Paul (Deborah) Boone, Jr., Paula (Paul) Abramson, and Raymond (Lisa) Boone. He was a cherished grandfather to Raymond (Erica) Boone, Jr., Angela (Dan) O’Connor, Shiryl (Donnie) Smith, Brittany (Ricky) Bullinger, Billy Peyton, Sara Abramson, Kristin (Daniel) Tackett, and Nicholas (Stefani) Boone. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Sarah, Kellan, Everly, Makaiya, Deonnie, DJ, Ella, Aria, Aleena, Lil Ricky, Reya, Ben, Mason, Marleigh, Kylie, and Addison.

Paul is also survived by his sisters, Ruth Anna Smardon and Betty Morris, and his brother, Ray Boone, Sr., along with many extended family members, friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, dedication, and willingness to help others.

Paul’s legacy is one of service, loyalty, compassion, and family. Whether wearing a police badge, helping a neighbor, caring for his loved ones, or making someone laugh, he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The Boone family is planning a gathering large enough to welcome family, friends, fellow retirees, former colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by Paul’s friendship, service, and generosity. Details will be shared with family and friends in the near future.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Baltimore Retired Police Benevolent Association Distress Fund.
