Paul E. Bates, age 84, of Joppa, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025. Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Paul was the son of the late William Charles Bates and Annie Mae (Bartlett) Bates.
Paul was the devoted husband of Diane G. Bates, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a loving family and a life full of cherished memories.
He was the beloved father of Shelley (Mark) Rannie and Steve (Joni) Bates; proud grandfather of Matthew Rannie, Jacob (fiancée Kaitlyn) Rannie, Samantha Diggles, Robbie Diggles, Christopher (Emma) Bates, and great grandchildren Gracie and Max.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Bates, Don Bates, Merle Bates, and sisters-in-law Noreen Bates and Karen Draper and is survived by brother-in-law Howard L. Graves, and sisters-in-law Mary Lou Bates and Marie Bates.
He received his Bachelor’s degree from Lock Haven University in 1963 and his Masters degree at University of Maryland Baltimore County. A dedicated physical education teacher for 33 years, Paul primarily taught at Logan Elementary School in Baltimore County, where he inspired countless students and was recognized with an award for his excellence in teaching. Outside of the classroom, he lived a full and active life. Paul played a lifetime of golf and tennis, participating in a senior tennis league, and also enjoyed snow skiing and water skiing.
Paul found immense joy in his family—teaching his grandchildren how to swim and play sports, cheering them on at their games, and sharing his handyman skills and knowledge with his son. Above all, Paul will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose kindness, energy, and love enriched the lives of all who knew him.
