Obituary

Mary Patricia (Mary Pat) Deane was born in El Paso, Texas, to Cleo Lafoy (“Chief”) Dowell and Hibernia Lynch (“Bonnie”) Caldwell Dowell. She grew up in Austin, Texas, with her older sister, Jane Dowell. Mary Pat attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree through the Plan II honors program. She was also a member of Chi Omega sorority. Following her undergraduate studies, Mary Pat attended Michigan State University on a Danforth Graduate Fellowship, earning a master's degree in education.

While in Graduate school and working at a summer camp in New Hampshire, Mary Pat met her future husband, Oliver Odell (“Ollie”) Deane, Jr. It was there that she also developed a lifelong love for New England, particularly New Hampshire. Mary Pat and Ollie married in 1955 and settled in New Jersey, first in Springfield and later in South Orange. There, they raised their three children, and Mary Pat devoted much of her time and energy to her family and community. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, served as a Girl Scout leader, and was a dedicated volunteer throughout her life.

Family life was filled with traditions and memorable gatherings. Winter weekends were often spent skiing at the beloved “Jollie House” in Vermont, while summers were spent in New Hampshire—first at summer camps, including Calumet and DeWitt, and later at the family's cherished “Anchorage” on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro. It was a place where sunsets were savored, songs were sung around the dinner table, and Friday night dinners became legendary.

Mary Pat had a passion for travel and inspired Ollie to share her enthusiasm. Together, they explored the world, embraced different cultures, and marveled at the beauty and wonders of nature.

In 2013, Mary Pat moved to Winchester Gardens in Maplewood, New Jersey, where she continued to enjoy an active and engaged life. She particularly appreciated the music programs and flower arranging activities and served on the Scholarship Committee.

Mary Pat was known for her warmth toward others, her boundless energy, and her unwavering commitment to family and community. Throughout her life, she was truly a “force”—a woman of strong convictions, deeply held ideals, and an enduring desire to contribute and make a difference. She lived a long, full, and meaningful life and will be dearly missed.

Mary Pat is survived by her three children, Patricia Parker (Terry), Kathy Deane, and Ken Deane (Michele); her grandchildren, Kristin and Matt Parker, Jessica Pantazis (Johnny), and Jacob Deane; and her great-grandchildren, Ruby, Ezry, Royal, and Grace.
