Mary "Jane" Carter

Mary “Jane” Carter, age 85 of Abingdon, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, in Towson, Maryland. Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Jane was the beloved daughter of the late Nell Marie (Dolan) and Walter Francis Nowosielski. Jane was the devoted wife of the late Leonard Morris Carter, Jr., with whom she shared a lifetime of love and happiness.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Walter “Rob” Carter and wife Dawn, Constance Carter Crumrine and late husband Greg, and Leonard “Michael” Carter and Cynthia Layman Stavropoulos. She was the proud and loving Nana to Jeremy Carter, Christopher Carter, Deneé Crumrine, Gary Crumrine, and Victoria Smith. She was blessed with six great grandchildren: Gavin Carter, Liam Carter, Cassidy Carter, Dmitri Carapella, Donovan Carapella, and Delaney Crumrine. Jane is survived by her brothers Walter “Punk” Nowosielski and James “Butch” Nowosielski. Her younger sister Teresa Nowosielski, passed away in June 1975.

Jane attended St. Stephen Catholic School through 10th grade and graduated from Aberdeen High School. After their marriage, Jane and Leonard attended Fork Methodist Church. Jane was the owner and operator of WeePeople Daycare, a residential daycare offering like-home care for children with working parents. She was proud to have been one of the first ten licensed home daycares in Harford County. She nurtured and loved children from around the area for 41 years.

One of Jane's great pleasures was going camping, first with her husband and children, and later sharing the joy of camping with their grandchildren. They spent many vacations riding bikes, fishing, cooking outdoors and exploring the areas they visited. Jane had a remarkable talent for baking and decorating cakes. Her beautiful wedding cakes blessed many couples on their special day and became a cherished memory of countless celebrations. The cakes she made were so delicious that even the scraps - called ‘scrappies - became a favorite treat for anyone lucky enough to be at the house when cakes were being trimmed. She was also known for making wonderful candy and cookies for the holidays and loved treasure hunting at local yard sales.

Jane suffered for many years with diabetes and related conditions. She developed macular degeneration later in life and had been a dialysis patient for the past decade.
