Russell Mark Hastler, age 69, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in Bel Air.
Born in Baltimore, MD, Mark was the beloved son of the late Russell William Hastler and Hilda Eleanor (Goetzke) Hastler. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Leslie Varga.
Mark is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Mary Hastler, with whom he celebrated their anniversary this past August. He was a loving and dedicated father to Heather (Nathan) Benson and Samantha (Nicholas) Wright. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Ella Benson, Hannah Benson, William Wright, and Ellie Wright.
He is also survived by his sister, Lisa Hastler, and sister in laws Cathy Preisendorfer, Linda Preisendorfer, and Bobbie Lipieko, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly, and his beloved Corgi Skye (aka Fergus).
Mark devoted more than four decades of his life to Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), where he started as a skilled mechanic and retired in 2019 as a Fleet Workshop Leader – Acting Fleet Supervisor after 43 years of dedicated service. He held ASE certifications and hydraulics certifications and was known by his colleagues for his strong work ethic, leadership, and integrity.
Those who knew Mark remember him for his quick wit and one-of-a-kind sense of humor, often giving family and friends affectionate (and hilarious) nicknames that stuck for years. He found joy in the simple things in life – a strong cup of coffee, a crisp fall morning, and early morning walks along the beach to find the best shells. A traditionalist at heart, Mark especially cherished the holidays – none more than Christmas – and could often be found watching Hallmark Christmas movies, enjoying the beauty of a winter snowfall, preparing his train garden to delight his grandkids, and appreciating the glow of Christmas lights and the magic they brought to the season.
Mark cherished his time at the family’s beach house in Ocean Pines, and eagerly looked forward to October 1, when he could finally take Skye out on the beach in Ocean City. In his free time, Mark enjoyed watching NASCAR, NHL, the Orioles, and the Ravens. He had a deep appreciation for muscle cars and was the proud owner of a 1968 Road Runner 383 Super Stock.
Above all, Mark was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was his world, and his legacy of love, laughter, and hard work will live on in all who knew him.
