Mabel Devorah Madry Laster, daughter of the late Andrew Edward Madry and Lucille Dean Madry, was born on February 25, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She departed this life peacefully at the age of 78 on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in Bel Air, MD.
Mabel, known by her closest family and friends as “Smabe”, was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Caregiver. She was known for her giving, generous, kind-hearted, and sentimental nature by willingly dedicating her life to caring for others. After attending Central Consolidated High School, Mabel worked briefly at the Maryland House and as a Teacher’s Aide for many years. She extended her passion for people into the healthcare field and became an In-Home Health and Therapeutic Aide for over 33 years with The Harford County Department of Social Services until her retirement in July 2005. Mabel undoubtedly gave her life to Christ at a young age and became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Mabel is the beloved mother of the late Teressa Madry, S. Jowanda Dorsey of Baltimore, MD and the God Mother of Shannon Washington (Darin), of Aberdeen, MD. Mabel also cherished her grandchildren, the late Travon Madry, the late Ja’vana Dorsey, and Kairen Madry-Hall of Essex, MD as well as her great-grandchildren, Ja’La Dorsey and Jazlynn Dorsey of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by her brothers, Alvin “Shorty” Madry and Allan “Bambi” Madry of Edgewood, MD; her aunt, Miriam Winder; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Teressa Michelle Madry; grandchildren, Travon Madry and Ja’vana Dorsey; her siblings, Cornelius “Andrew” Madry, Cecilia “Tootie” Tolbert, and Beverly Hibbs.
Mabel shared a special bond with the beloved father of her two children, the late Clinton “Eastwood” Dorsey. She was a true fighter—through every sickness, she never gave up and continued to care for others despite her own struggles.
She was a proud Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan. Smabe loved crafts, crocheting, bingo, QVC shopping, watching cooking shows and the races at Pimlico (she shared this hobby with her father). She became a member of The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States in November 2008. Smabe spent many days at Charlton-Miller VFW Post #6054, in Perryman, MD where she loved watching the Ravens games and bringing her goodies to feed her VFW family, friends, and patrons. Mabel was also a member of the Esquires Motorcycle Club. She was a wonderful cook who delighted her family with her delicious, homemade meals and sweet treats.
Her kindness, warmth, and strength will forever be remembered by all who knew her. She touched so many lives.
