Leo John Behr

May 27, 1933 — July 9, 2025

Selbyville, DE

Leo J. Behr, age 92 of Abingdon, Maryland passed away on July 9, 2025. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Jacob and Margeret (Aull) Behr. His passing was proceeded by his late wife of 43 years Maxine Behr.

Leo is survived by daughters Andrea Farmer and Terri Bell; grandchildren Benjamin, Jonelle, and Amber; great-grandchildren Derek, Dillon and Caitlin, and many nieces and nephews.

Leo was raised in the Brewer’s Hill and Highlandtown neighborhoods in Baltimore city, with his beloved sister Gertrude. He attended grade school at the Shrine of the Little Flower and was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School. He served in the military (Army) from 1953 to 1955. He was first married in July of 1956 to the late Janice Debelius. He was a salesman, in the printing ink industry for many years. Later in life he operated his own home improvement company. Along with life changes, he also found his partner in life Maxine Shipper, who he married in March of 1980.

Leo was an avid-sportsmen and hunted all of his life. He harvested deer and waterfowl from Maryland’s eastern shore to the mountains of Pennsylvania, where he hunted with his dear friend Don of Hunlock Creek, PA. However, his first love was fishing and crabbing. He seemed to know all the waterways of the Chesapeake and never gave up an opportunity to be on the water. With that, he was also a proud boat owner for over 60-years and when he wasn’t on the water he spent many an hour preparing his craft to make another run.

Leo had another beloved hobby in building and flying model airplanes. He graduated to building an ultralight airplane and flew many hours. Truly nothing more than a human occupied drone. His ultralight flying days ended with an emergency landing in the middle of an occupied golf course! Thankfully, there were no injuries. This became the brunt of many a joke and after that landing, he focused on staying on the ground with his radio-controlled planes.

He was also dedicated to his community and was a member of the Grace Assembly of God church in Bel Air, Md. As a dedicated member, he donated many hours and provided fiscal support in establishing the ministry.
