Larry Leonard

It is with much sadness that the family of Lawrence C. Leonard (aka Larry) announce his passing at age 95 on November 3rd, 2023. Larry grew up in Hackensack, NJ and was the son of the late George J. Leonard and Halfrieda Ammann. He is survived by his oldest brother: George Leonard 101, of The Villages, FL; and is predeceased by brothers: Jack Leonard, William Leonard, and Paul Leonard, and sister: Mary Louise “Ouise” Zeliff. 

Larry is the beloved husband of Carolyn J. Leonard; loving father of Larry (Diane) Leonard, Jr., Kathleen (Michael) Kelly, Karen (Phillip) Meese, and Daniel Leonard; caring grandfather of: Jaclyn Price, Colleen Golioso, Brianna Kelly, Gaven Meese, Braden Meese, David Leonard, Leanne Leonard, and Kendall Leonard; and great-grandfather of 4 great-grandsons.

Larry joined the Naval Reserve while attending Hackensack High School. After graduation, he attended the RCA Institutes then worked for Consolidated Film Industries. Larry was called to active service during the Korean War and served 2 years on the Destroyer USS Trathen, DD530 as a radioman. After being discharged from the Navy, Larry joined Crockett and Buss Association in Albertson, Long Island as a territory sales manager for floor covering.

 
In 1960, he married Carolyn Mueller of Jamaica, NY. They raised 4 children in Norwalk, then Wilton CT. Larry was a member of the Shore and Country Club in Norwalk. He played Level A men’s tennis, served as a Little League coach, and was an assistant Boy Scout Leader. 


Larry retired in 1993, where he then moved to St. James Plantation in Southport, NC in 1996. 


Larry loved sports. He played golf in St. James and was a member of the Men’s Golf Association. He remained a faithful fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers / New York Mets, and New York Football Giants.


Larry was a founding member of American Legion, Post 543 in St. James and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, NC. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his love of Country, sports and summer vacations at LBI, NJ and Sunset Beach NC. 

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 141 N Hickory Ave, Bel Air, MD on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 10am.
