Kim Michael Edwards, age 78, passed away on January 12th, 2026, in Bel Air, Maryland, with his loving wife and daughter by his side.
Born in Bad Axe, Michigan on March 14, 1947, Kim was preceded in death by his parents, Dornis C. Edwards and Ethel Balint Edwards, as well as his younger brother, Mark.
He married his high school sweetheart, Lynne Heidrich, whom he met in 10th-grade geometry class. Both went on to study at Michigan State University, where Kim graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising.
Tired of the cold weather, Kim and Lynne went south to Florida in their early years of marriage, where they enjoyed being closer to Lynne’s mother. It was there that their only child, a daughter (Erin), was born.
Wanting to raise her elsewhere and having close friends in the Atlanta area, their young family moved to Powder Springs, Georgia, where they spent over 40 years. There, they were extremely active in church, their jobs (Kim as a Regional Group Insurance Manager, Lynne as a teacher), and life with local friends and family.
Kim was an avid golfer beginning in his teenage years, when his parents would drop him and his brother off at the golf course each summer day. He never looked back, finding ways to play right up until his passing. Most of Kim’s best friendships developed through golf, church, or both.
While in Georgia, Kim and Lynne served for numerous years and in various capacities at Christ Lutheran Church in Marietta, where he and Lynne were founding members and members of the church council.
In addition to golf, Kim enjoyed any good ballgame or golf tournament, playing billiards, Michigan State sports, and all Atlanta sports, especially Braves baseball. He logged many hours at the ballpark with Erin, instilling in her a love for the game and for the Braves that she has since passed on to Kim’s two granddaughters, Elsa (16) and Addie (14). In recent years, Kim also became quite fond of his local Baltimore teams, rooting on the Ravens and O’s.
Though Kim and Lynne enjoyed their lives in Georgia, they longed to be closer to Erin, her husband Nathan, and their two granddaughters so much so that, in 2018, they moved a few miles down the street from them in Maryland. Though a job change took Erin’s family to Indiana less than two years later, Kim and Lynne have remained in Maryland ever since, where they have enjoyed renovating their beautiful mid-century home and building new friendships with neighbors and friends at Mountain Christian Church.
Outgoing and quick to make new friends, Kim was a true lover of all people. He naturally found a way to make people comfortable and relaxed around him, often through his tremendous sense of humor. Generous with his time and resources, Kim loved to shop, whether roaming an antique market, exploring an arts festival, or, his favorite, spoiling his granddaughters on trips to Target and their other favorite stores. Kim was notorious for, while verbalizing that he definitely didn’t need it, still always talking himself into buying yet another comfy, hoodie sweatshirt.
Always up for an adventure, Kim loved to travel domestically or internationally with Lynne, as well as with Nathan, Erin, the girls, and other dear friends. Kim and Lynne developed a special love for Mexico, where Nathan and Erin served as missionaries with CMF International (2004-2011), helping plant a campus ministry called El Pozo in Cholula, Puebla. They traveled there countless times and even spent an entire month there following Lynne’s retirement from teaching in 2008. Already regular visitors, their visits increased in frequency following the births of both granddaughters. They’ve been faithful financial and prayer supporters of El Pozo since its inception.
Kim was an avid reader, a lover of Jeopardy!, a collector of many things, and a meticulous caretaker of his yard. He was a faithful husband for 56 years of marriage! He was, in Erin’s words, a “present, playful, and purposeful dad” – and grandfather (“Papa”) – and friend.
Kim was always quick to lend a listening ear to friends and neighbors. He was an easygoing man of steady, quiet strength and gentle nature. Simply put, Kim loved God, loved life, and loved others well. He was, as Erin has said repeatedly since his passing, “easy to love, and easy to be loved by”.
Kim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lynne Edwards; daughter Erin McDade, son-in-law Nathan McDade, and two granddaughters Elsa and Addie McDade, as well as Lynne’s extended family with whom he has always been extremely close. This group includes his sister-in-law Susan Turnbull and niece Andrea Turnbull Lombardo; sister-in-law Jan Rice, brother-in-law Jim Rice, and nieces Alex Rice, Quinn Carter (Patrick) and nephew Daniel Rice (Lauren); sister-in-law Tina Heidrich, and sister-in-law Lisa Heidrich, and brother-in-law Mitch Larson.
A celebration of life service – a time of storytelling and worship – will be held on Saturday, February 21st at 3 PM, at Mountain Christian Church (Abingdon Campus) in Abingdon, Maryland. Attenders are asked to wear, in Kim’s honor and memory, one of their favorite, most comfy hoodie sweatshirts.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider an honorary gift to benefit CMF International’s campus ministry in Puebla, Mexico, called El Pozo (The Well), which ministers to university students, helping them know and follow Jesus. (You can give directly at www.cmfi.org/rememberingkim , or by check made out to CMF International (Attn: El Pozo) // 5525 E. 82nd Street // Indianapolis, IN 46250).
