Kathleen "Kass" Chaplain Freeland

April 18, 1944 — January 14, 2026

Kathleen “Kass” Chaplain Freeland, age 81, of Abingdon, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Kass was born in Maryland to the late Calvin Willis Chaplain and the late Ruth Julia (Bachman) Chaplain. She grew up in Reisterstown, Maryland, where she developed a deep love for her family, learning, and and a heartfelt joy in the everyday moments that made life meaningful.

Kass was a 1962 graduate of Franklin High School in Reisterstown, Maryland, where she earned an academic degree and was a member of the National Honor Society. She continued her education at Catonsville Junior College. A lifelong learner, Kass enjoyed reading and exploring the spiritual and mystical side of life. She had a strong passion for genealogy and found great joy in studying family history.

Kass was exceptionally kindhearted and showed a genuine concern for the well-being of others. Fiercely independent and determined to do things her own way, she drew on that strength and courage to raise her children as a single mother, encouraging them always to reach for the stars. Kass loved theater, singing, and dancing. She especially cherished family gatherings and took great joy in decorating and celebrating during the Christmas season. She adored all family pets, including her most recent “granddogs” Ginger, Jasmine, Winston, and Chelsea.

Kass always encouraged her children to explore the world and delighted in hearing about their adventures. She fulfilled this dream for herself by spending six months of each year for six years in England, where her daughter lives. During that time, Kass traveled widely, became an active member of Gracious Street Methodist Church, and formed many cherished friendships in her home away from home.

In addition to her parents, Kass was preceded in death by her siblings, Wilma Hardtke, Eleanor Ann Chaplain, Richard Chaplain and her niece/goddaughter Megan Hamid.

Kass is survived by her loving children, Adam Freeland and his wife Donna, and Jacqualin Daysh and her husband Lee; her cherished grandchildren, Jacob Freeland and Ava Freeland; and her dear sister, Frances Hamid and her husband Michel; niece, Stacy Hamid; nephews Karl, Michael, Joseph and Paul Hardtke; and a large extended family whom she held very dearly.

A heartfelt celebration of life is being planned for July 2026, where loved ones will gather to honor a beautiful legacy and give thanks for a life deeply blessed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Harford County Public Library Silver Reader Program.
