Emblem

Juan B. Ponce, age 68, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026. He was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to his loving late parents, Rafael Ponce Minguela and Iris Martell Minguela

Juan proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring as a Sergeant Major in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). He was extremely proud of his military service, and his family was deeply proud of his dedication, bravery, and lifelong commitment to protecting others.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Maritza Ponce; his devoted sons, Michael Antonio Ponce and Juan Gabriel Ponce; his siblings, Carmín Dos Santos, Rapheal Ponce, Edgar Vega, Rosa Martell, Yolanda Rodríguez, and Orlando Ponce; his best friends, Kerry Jones and Michael Bárcena; and his cherished and loving dog, Bori Ponce.

Juan was a deeply family-focused man—his family was truly his world. He was a loving and devoted husband and an amazing father who always put his sons first. During his son’s illness, Juan remained strong and unwavering, always ensuring his family was cared for. He was the ultimate protector and a constant source of strength, love, and guidance for those who depended on him.

Juan’s greatest joy became his grandchildren, whom he adored beyond measure. Being their grandfather brought him immense happiness, and his face would light up whenever he was with them. While his world centered on his grandchildren, Juan was also an amazing uncle to any niece or nephew who reached out to him in need—always ready to help, support, and protect them as his own.

Juan had a joyful sense of humor and a love for laughter, especially when watching Minions movies, which never failed to bring a smile to his face. He also deeply enjoyed the Avatar films and made it a cherished tradition to see them in theaters together with his family. Juan had a strong passion for baseball, a love that began while playing in the streets of Puerto Rico during his youth. He proudly passed this passion on to his sons, ensuring they shared in the joy of the game. He also enjoyed watching Life Below Zero, along with wilderness survival and historical television programs.

A passionate and talented cook, Juan began each day at 4:00 a.m., lovingly preparing breakfast for his wife as a daily expression of his care and devotion. He loved his siblings deeply, and they often relied on him for his strength, guidance, and unwavering support.
