At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Army where he served more than 30 years, including serving in the Vietnam war. He rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 before retiring in 1988. During his military career he received numerous commendations including Meritorious Service Medal, Army Service Commendation, and Achievement Medal. After retirement, he continued his service to his country as a postal worker for the United States Post Service. He retired from there in 2008. In his personal time, he was one the founders of Messiah Community Baptist Church and served on its board from its inception in 2004 until the time of his passing. He loved his church and found great joy in laughing with its members and before he became wheelchair bound, he loved fishing. His happiest moments were spending time with his wife and enjoying his granddaughters. He was a loving son, a kind brother, a devoted father, a dotting husband and a joyful grandfather. But first and foremost, he was a child of God who knew his father by name and was a faithful servant.
