Johnnie Mack Ashley, age 80, of Edgewood, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2025.
Born in Fair Bluff, North Carolina, Johnnie was the beloved son of the late John Ashley and Pauline (Smith) Ashley. He proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. It was during his time stationed in Germany that he met the love of his life, Helga (Schirrmeister) Ashley. Their love story began in a pizza shop, where Johnnie offered Helga and her friends a ride—one night of dancing turned into 54 beautiful years of marriage.
A devoted husband and steadfast provider, Johnnie was known for his deep love for Helga, whom he affectionately called his "beautiful German bride." Following his military service, Johnnie worked as a Master Instructor in Civil Service at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he dedicated 23 years before retiring.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his brother, Cephus Ashley, and his sister, Rosa Ashley.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Nancy Dockery, several nieces, and nephews as well as many loving friends. Johnnie's legacy is one of loyalty, service, and enduring love.
Johnnie will be remembered as a good husband, a good provider, and a proud veteran whose strength and love enriched the lives of all who knew him.
