John W. Cairnes

December 3, 1949 — August 23, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Wilson Cairnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted member of the Harford County community. John passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the age of 75 in Bel Air, Maryland.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, John was the cherished son of the late George Wilson Cairnes and Ida Evelyn (Hess) Cairnes. He was a proud man whose life was marked by integrity, service, and a commitment to those around him.

John is survived by his loving wife, Rita Ann Marie Cairnes (née Caron); his son, John Cairnes II; and his daughter, Mary McLaughlin (née Cairnes). He was a proud grandfather to Benjamin Sullivan and Hamilton Sullivan. He also leaves behind his stepsons Stephen and Matthew Taylor, and stepdaughters Lauren and Johanna Taylor, cousins Jack Williams, Nancy and John Coontz, and many other cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. John also leaves behind his beloved dog Annabelle.

John's roots in Harford County run deep — he was the 9th generation of the Cairnes family to live on the family farm, on the same street where he was raised. His family’s history in the region dates back to the early 1700s. His parents, George and Evelyn Cairnes were recognized as “Harford Living Treasures” by the Harford County Council for their lifelong dedication to the community — a tradition of service John proudly carried on.

A man known for his larger-than-life personality; John made friends wherever he went. He was a role model to many and a pillar of his community.

His impressive list of accomplishments and service include:

• Realtor of the Year, State of Maryland

• Realtor of the Year, Harford County

• President, Central Maryland Multiple Listing Service

• Life Member Award, Maryland Realtors Political Action Committee

• Lifetime Member, Harford County Million Dollar Association

• 10 Years of Service, Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company

• Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jarrettsville Federal Savings & Loan

• Elder, Trustee, and Deacon, Bethel Presbyterian Church

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in John’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
