Joan T. Ensor

June 3, 1938 — October 23, 2022

Joan Townsley Ensor, age 84, of Jarrettsville, passed away on October 23, 2022 surrounded by her loving family at the Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill, Maryland.

Joan was born on June 3rd, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Marion and Edna (Walter) Townsley. She grew up in Pleasantville and graduated from Bel Air High School, in 1956. After high school she worked for Harford Mutual Insurance Company before moving to Norfolk, Virginia with her husband who was in the Navy. Joan and her husband returned to Harford County settling in Jarrettsville. Joan began working for the Jarrettsville Post Office where she retired after 28 years in 1998 as the Deputy Postmaster. During her time at the post office, she was awarded many accolades, but none as important as the community of people she befriended. Known as “Miss Joan”, she visited schools and hosted many school classes for tours of the post office.

Believing in a life dedicated to service, Joan was involved in many activities which kept her active until her passing. A Life Member of the Darlington/Dublin VFW Post #10146, she spent 19 consecutive years as the President of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was recognized on many occasions by the state for her work with and contributions to the Veterans in Maryland. Nothing made her happier than supporting the veterans and helping their families.

She was a member of the Jarrettsville United Methodist Church for 51 years, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School and being a member of the women’s group. With her husband, she was an active participant with the Maryland Beagle Club in Shawsville, the USS Boxer Veterans Association, and the Golden Agers club. A people person at heart, she enjoyed staying busy and surrounded herself with a community of friends, including her peers from the Bel Air High School graduating class of 1956. She actively worked on committees to plan class reunions.

Joan always made family a priority as it was most important to her. Her love, devotion, and kindness will forever be etched in the hearts of the people who knew and loved her.

Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Hoover “John” Ensor, her sister, Barbara T. Milam, and her son in law, Robert L. McNally. She is survived by her two children: John E. Ensor and his wife Anne, and Lisa E. McNally. She also leaves behind three grandchildren: Robert L. McNally Jr, Morgan E. Ensor, and Garrett E. Ensor. Joan also leaves her sister Carole L. Townsley of Pleasantville and her brother Gerald E. Townsley of Abingdon, Maryland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Perry Point Veterans Hospital or Jarrettsville United Methodist Church.

We would like to thank the Senator Bob Hooper Hospice House for their kindness during this transition.

The family would like to personally thank: Erin, “Big Boss”, and Cara for your kindness and compassion during the last 18 months.

Sherrell: Thank you for taking care of our mother and grandmother so well. You were not only her aide, but her friend and someone she truly loved.
