Jerold Lee Nook

February 7, 1943 — August 17, 2025

Jerold Lee Nook, 82, died peacefully at Sterling Care Rehabilitation in Forest Hill, Maryland on 17 August 2025 following his battle with Urothelial Cancer.

Jerold was born 7 February 1943 in Lenox, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Wilma Nook. He was raised on the family farm, attended “Frog Pond” one-room schoolhouse just down the road from the family home through 8th grade. He graduated from Lenox High School in 1961. He attended and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1966.

Right after graduating from college, Uncle Sam drafted him into the Army. Jerold always said Uncle Sam got a cheap engineer to work at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) testing Army Materiel for soldiers in the field. After being discharged from the Army on a Friday, he went back to work at APG on Monday as a civilian. He spent the rest of his professional life testing Army Materiel for our Warrior Soldiers.

Jerold and Sandra Phyl Boland were married 10 February 1968 at the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, Iowa. Jerold and Sandra had celebrated 57 years of marriage. After they both retired from APG, they enjoyed traveling to visiting Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields and many of the National Parks all over the country. Jerold volunteered at the APG Post Chapel and was the head of the Protestant Men of the Chapel for close to 30 years. Family was very important to him, and he loved to spend time with his grandchildren as well as visiting family and friends in their home state of Iowa.

Jerold is survived by his wife, Sandra, his daughter Renee, son-in-law Patrick Ward and grandchildren Trevor and Elsie. Also, his son, Mark, daughter-in-law Elizabeth and grandchildren Kieran and Harper. In addition, his brother Glen (Shirley) and sister Arlene Steddom (Ron Eichhorst) and many nieces and nephews of the Nook and Boland families. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Nook, and Dwight Nook.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM at McComas Family Funeral Homes, Abingdon. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 PM at the same location.

A separate family internment will be held at a later date at (Garrison Veterans Cemetery in Baltimore County).
