Obituary

Jenaro Hernandez, age 84, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Born in Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Genaro Hernandez and Ines (Ramos) Hernandez.

Mr. Hernandez was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Nena Labrador Hernandez, and a sister, Lilian Ducos.

He is survived by his loving son, Dr. JJ Hernandez; daughter-in-law Avelaine Trabel; his cherished grandchildren (who called him Abu), Julian Hernandez and Amelia Hernandez; and his sisters, Maria Magdalena Hernandez, Evangelina Hernandez, Sonia Hernandez, and Norma Hernandez.

Jenaro was a faithful member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Abingdon, Maryland.

Over the years, he held a variety of occupations, reflecting his strong work ethic and versatility. He worked as a carpenter for Hausmann Industries in New Jersey for 15 years, briefly served as a pharmacy manager in New York City, and sold Kirby vacuum cleaners. At one time, he owned a small diner on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

In his younger years, Jenaro was an accomplished boxer and competed as a featherweight in the Pan American Games. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time at the reservoir along the New Jersey/New York border, as well as a local pond in Glen Rock. He also had a passion for gardening, where he grew both flowers and vegetables—especially bitter melons—and loved cooking both Puerto Rican and American cuisine.

Jenaro was a devoted baseball fan and especially loved the New York Yankees. He also enjoyed collecting coins and baseball cards. Known for his orderly nature, he took pride in keeping things clean and well-organized. Above all, he will be remembered for his happy-go-lucky spirit, kind heart, politeness, friendliness, and for always being a true gentleman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jenaro’s memory to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1450 Abingdon Road, Abingdon, MD 21009, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 502 Washington Avenue, Suite #300, Towson, MD 21204, or online at: https://www.alz.org/
