Jean H. Penley, age 90, of Edgewood, Maryland passed away on November 16, 2023, at Jacob’s Well Assisted Living in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late James and Ethel (Roten) Hedrick and wife of the late Wilbur Penley. Jean and Will happily shared 56 years of marriage. She retired from PNC Bank in 1997 after 24 years of service. In those 24 years, Jean saw the bank going from Forest Hill State Bank to Mercantile County Bank and finally PNC.
Jean was a Peabody trained pianist and organist who played for several churches in the local area for over 50 years. She also stayed very busy with the Order of the Eastern Star, beginning her long association by joining Job’s Daughters at the age of 11. Over the years, Jean held many positions in the Eastern Star including Grand Organist in 1988 and 2017; Grand Marshal in 2000; Past Matron; Past Honored Queen – Bethel Chapter 14 of Job’s Daughters International and Grand Secretary for the State of Maryland OES from 2007-2009. She will be remembered as a great daughter, wife, mother and a hard-working member of her organizations.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her youngest son, Paul Penley in 1979.
Jean is survived by her son, James Penley and her son-in-law Stuart Brittingham as well as many loving extended relatives.
