Jane Elizabeth Shumate

Jane Elizabeth Shumate, age 84, of Forest Hill, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Earl Ferguson and Eleanor (Smith) Merryman, and the beloved wife of the late Robert Edward Shumate.

Jane was known for her lively spirit and love of life. She especially loved to dance—her favorite song was “Mustang Sally.” She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, tending to her garden, and going camping. Jane was a dedicated and hardworking woman who was always on the move. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Mocha.

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Shumate, and Karen Kiebler; grandson, Wayne Kiebler; granddaughter, Karrinne Kiebler and significant other Bradley Trieschman; and great-grandchildren, Cooper Trieschman, and Carter Trieschman. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Shumate; and brothers, George Ferguson, Robert Ferguson, Charles Ferguson, and Richard Merryman, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jane and her beloved Mocha’s name to the Harford County Humane Society.
