James Francis Wagner, age 89, of Abingdon, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2026, in Abingdon, Maryland.

Born in Rocky Grove, Pennsylvania, James was the beloved son of the late Carl Clifton Wagner and the late Mary Eletha Wagner.

James was the devoted husband of the late Shirley Joyce Wagner, with whom he shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering devotion to one another.

After graduating from high school, James answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. During his distinguished military career, he chose to become an air traffic controller, serving proudly for 24 years. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he continued his career as an air traffic controller at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he eventually became the supervisor of the control tower. His dedication, professionalism, and leadership earned the respect of all who worked alongside him until his retirement in 2002. While working full-time, James also demonstrated his commitment to lifelong learning by graduating from Harford Community College.

It was while stationed in Harrisburg that James met the love of his life, Shirley. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership built on love, respect, and commitment, lasting nearly six decades.

Above all else, James was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who placed his family at the center of his life. He was a strong, dedicated, and loving family man who would do anything for those he loved. He served both his country and his family with great pride and honor.

James enjoyed spending his free time golfing, grilling, and preparing one of his favorite meals—shish kebabs—for family and friends. He loved visiting Hollywood Casino, where he enjoyed gambling and sharing laughs with his loved ones. He was happiest relaxing on his front porch, greeting neighbors with a smile and always willing to lend a helping hand. Hardworking, dependable, and tough, James enjoyed being outdoors in the sunshine and was known for his reliability, generosity, and readiness to help anyone in need.

James is survived by his loving children, Susan (Christopher) Thornton and Thomas (Suzan) Wagner. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Patrick Thornton, Michael Thornton, and Tiffany Fantom, siblings, Charles, Beverly, and Janet, extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will forever remember his kindness, strength, and unwavering love for his family.

James was preceded in death by his son, James Wagner.
