It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Frank Akczinski, who died on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and his beloved wife, Joanna Helena Akczinski, who passed away just two days later, on Monday, August 4, 2025, in Havre De Grace, Maryland.
James and Joanna were devoted to each other in life and now rest together in peace. They were married for 62 wonderful years and built a life centered around love, family, and shared passions.
James Frank Akczinski born 4/09/1940.
Born and raised in Baltimore, James was the son of the late Frank M. Akczinski and Irene (Macek) Akczinski. He proudly served in the United States Army and worked for 30 years at the General Motors Assembly Plant, retiring in 1995. He later worked for 14 years in Fan Assistance at Camden Yards with the Baltimore Orioles, a role he truly enjoyed. James was an avid fan of Texas Hold ’Em poker, often participating in tournaments at the Perryville and Edgewood American Legions, as well as the VFW in Bel Air. He also enjoyed time at the casino and was always ready for a good game and great conversation. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Robert Akczinski and Frank Akczinski.
Joanna Helena Akczinski born 08/24/1943.
Joanna was born in Baltimore to the late Anthony Peter Rutkowski and Bertha (Regulski) Rutkowski. She retired in 1997 after many years working in various secretarial positions. Joanna shared her husband's love for Texas Hold ’Em and cherished time with her sisters. She was known as a second mom to many of her nieces and nephews, always offering warmth, support, and a listening ear. Family was the center of her life, and she took great joy in nurturing the relationships that kept everyone connected. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Together, James and Joanna are survived by their devoted daughters, Barbara Akczinski and Judith Shankel; their beloved grandchildren, Andrew Plempel and Eric Graves; and their cherished great-grandchild, Sam Lockwood-Plempel. Joanna is also survived by her loving sisters, Rosemary Winkler, Antoinette Querry, and Theresa Anderson. In addition, they leave behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in their hearts.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a cause close to the family.
Together in life, together in rest — James and Joanna’s legacy of love, family, and service will be forever cherished.
