It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria Jean Futty, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who passed away on May 4, 2025, at the age of 78 after a third battle with cancer. She was deeply loved and brought joy and laughter to all who knew her.
Jean devoted over four decades of her professional life to working in personnel for the Department of Defense, serving as a Human Resources Officer at Aberdeen Proving Ground before retiring. Her positive spirit and dedication made a lasting impact on her colleagues and resulted in many life-long friendships.
She found great joy in the company of her family, including daily talks—and lots of laughs—with her daughter Barbara with whom she shared a very close relationship. As a devoted grandmother to Ethan and Elliott, she spoiled them in the best way with overflowing love and support. She treasured family gatherings and time spent around the pool every summer. She never said no to getting in the pool with her grandsons, no matter the temperature, because their happiness is what mattered most.
As a loyal friend who saw the best in everyone, she was always available if someone needed her. She had many decades-long friendships, and her neighbors became like family to her. She cherished her Ladies Night Out group of friends who met at least monthly for dinners and shared stories, laughs, and heartaches through over 40 years of friendship.
She was also an avid reader and active member of her book club. Her dogs, Lilah and Tinkerbell, were constant companions during long reads and more and brought her much happiness over the years.
She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. In addition to those mentioned above, Jean is survived by her loving son-in-law Mark Brown, sisters Joan DeMey and Hester Hayes, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Pearl Hayes.
Jean’s cheerful spirit, kindness, sincerity, and love will forever remain in our hearts. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
