Gary D. Starkey

Gary Dana Starkey, age 79, of Forest Hill, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the beloved son of the late William Theodore Starkey and the late Thelma Catherine (Wright) Starkey.

Gary lived a life defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering love for his family. He was a proud veteran of the Air National Guard, where he served honorably for 33 years and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. His commitment to serving others continued throughout his life as he dedicated more than 27 years to the Baltimore City Police Department, retiring as a Baltimore City Police Officer. Even after his retirement, Gary's desire to serve his community remained strong as he continued working as a court bailiff in Baltimore City.

Gary was a proud member of the Masons, including Masonic Lodge #184. He was also a 32° member of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Baltimore Forest No. 45. Additionally, he was a lifetime member of the FOP and the NRA.

While Gary was proud of his many years of service, the greatest joy in his life was his family. He was especially close with his parents and remained a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle throughout his life. Family gatherings and celebrations meant everything to Gary, and he rarely missed an opportunity to be surrounded by the people he loved. The memories created during those special moments will forever be cherished by his family.

Gary had a deep appreciation for the simple things in life and the activities that brought him joy. An avid fisherman and boating enthusiast, he loved spending time on the water. He loved eating crabs, a good steak, camping, being surrounded by nature, and escaping to one of his favorite places, Wildwood, New Jersey, where he found great happiness and peace. He also had a lifelong love of music and, in his younger years, shared his musical talents as a member of a barbershop quartet.

Gary was also a proud muscle car enthusiast. He enjoyed going to races at Maple Grove Speedway with his brother and nephews. He took great pride in his cars and the care he gave them, always making sure they were kept in the best possible condition.

Above all, Gary was a man of honesty, integrity, and strong character. He was a Christian who believed in treating others with respect and sincerity and took great pride in always doing what he believed was right. His quiet strength, devotion to his loved ones, and commitment to his country and community were qualities that defined the life he lived.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Linda Starkey; his daughters, Melissa and her husband, John Hahn III, Shannon Heim, and Catherine Thomas; his grandchildren, John Hahn IV, Austin Hahn, Brandon Heim, Nicolas Thomas, and Abby Thomas; his great-grandchildren, Brantley Heim, Dalton Heim, and Bailey Heim; his brother, Dale Starkey and his wife, Cathy; and his nephews, Brian Starkey and Michael Starkey. He is also survived by many other loving family members and dear friends.

Gary leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of service, love, strength, and integrity will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
