Francis “Frank” John Smidt, age 85, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2025. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Frank Smidt and Genevieve (Buczkowski) Smidt.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Frank was known for his kind and friendly nature, always making friends everywhere he went. He was a devoted family man and a strong supporter of The John Carroll School, as his children and grandchildren attended there. He was also a proud graduate of Calvert Hall College High School and went on to earn an associate’s degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore.
Frank proudly served in the Maryland Air National Guard before beginning a long career as a Senior Forecaster for Baltimore Gas and Electric. Outside of work, he was a dedicated Ravens, Orioles, and Terps fan, and nothing brought him more joy than cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events. He loved spending time on the water, fishing, crabbing and boating. Frank also enjoyed traveling, whether on various cruises or being a “snow bird” in Orlando and Myrtle Beach.
Frank cherished the time spent with his group of lifelong friends, fondly known as “Charlie’s Corner,” who gathered monthly for lunch and camaraderie. He will be remembered for his warmth, compassion, and ability to make everyone he met feel like a true friend. His legacy of kindness and love will live on through all who knew him.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Genevieve Smidt, his sister, Claudia and his brother, George Smidt.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maryann Smidt; his sons, Timothy (Michele) Smidt and Robert (Regina) Smidt; his grandchildren, Holly Marzullo, Joshua Smidt, Matthew Smidt and Jacob Smidt; his sister, Mary Ann Diem; his sister-in-law Virginia Smidt; and his brother-in-law, Edward (Shirley) Lejk.
Family and friends will cherish his memory and the love he shared so freely.
