Obituary

Edgar “Sonny” Walker, age 83, of Abingdon, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2026.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Sonny was the beloved son of the late Edgar Davis Walker Jr. and the late Dorothy Olivia Walker, née Heckner.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Sonny honorably served his country aboard the USS Laffey, a ship that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He greatly enjoyed returning to the USS Laffey, where he worked to maintain and preserve the ship that meant so much to him.

Sonny shared a remarkable 64 years of marriage with the love of his life, Cherie Walker. Their enduring love was evident to all who knew them. Sonny treated Cherie like his queen, cherishing her each and every day, and together they built a life centered on love, devotion, and family.

Family was the foundation of Sonny's life. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was deeply involved in coaching his children's and grandchildren's sports teams, taking immense pride in encouraging them both on and off the field. His guidance, and unwavering support created countless cherished memories that will live on for generations.

An avid golfer, Sonny loved spending time on the golf course with family and friends. He was also a devoted fan of the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens and rarely missed the opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Walker Jr. and Dorothy Olivia Walker, née Heckner.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Cherie Walker, née Mann; his daughters, Tracy Kunmann and Peggy Donovan; his son-“in-law”, Bill Kunmann; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Jenny) Kunmann, Eric Kunmann, Ross (Mel) Kunmann, Brett (Sarah) McGeehan, Timmy (Gabby) Kunmann, Ryan Donovan, Logan Donovan, and Whitney Flanary; six great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
