Dorothy Curry Worthington of Havre de Grace passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in her home on July 4th after a long illness. She is predeceased by her husband, Lawrence William Worthington, with whom she shared forty-two years of marriage. She is also predeceased by her parents, Charles Melvin Curry, Sr. and Marie Curry; four brothers, Charles Curry Jr., George Curry, Walter Curry and Roy (Ned) Curry; and three sisters, Lillian Curry, Elsie Curry and Marge Burkindine.
She is survived by her five children Janet Martin and husband Joseph of Havre de Grace, Frank Worthington, Sr. and wife Mary of Port Deposit, Dorothy (Ann) Polk and husband Jack of Havre de Grace, Mary Ross and husband Clarence of Churchville, and Paul Worthington and wife Barbara of Havre de Grace in addition to fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Of her fourteen grandchildren, her ten grandsons, Dwayne Worthington, Frank Worthington, Jr., Shane Polk, Eric Polk, Patrick Ross, Daniel Worthington, Timmy Martin, David Worthington, Edward Worthington, and Brian Polk will be acting as her pallbearers.
Known by friends and loved ones as "Dot" or "Shorty," Dorothy was a lifetime member of the Rock Run United Methodist Church and Sunday School. She was also a charter member of the Level Volunteer Fire Company where she worked as part of the Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her work in the local community, Dot worked at Bryan's Orchards as a tomato picker, Aberdeen Proving Ground as a mail deliverer, and at Joseph's Department Store in Havre de Grace as a sales clerk. However, where she really shined was in the kitchen.
It is well known that Dorothy loved to can and was a wonderful cook and a gracious hostess. Her homemade rolls and apple pies were especially famous and sought after. Upon her marriage in 1944, she moved to the family farm, known as Tripple Union Farms. There, she joined her mother-in-law in fixing meals for family members and the hired help. Eventually she took over the daunting task of cooking two meals a day, six days a week by herself. She did so for thirty-eight years while also taking care of her own family. Even with so much work to do, Dorothy always managed to have baked goods, soup, or dumplings prepared for the Rock Run Church bake sales and dinners. Anyone who went to her house knew that she would have something delicious to offer them to eat.
When she was not busy cooking, Dorothy enjoyed being outdoors. She loved to mow her yard and to relax on her side porch. When springtime came around, she could always be found in her vegetable garden and tending to the multitude of flowers she had planted. On Sundays, she always had family over but when she wasn't at home she loved to eat out and play bingo. Dot also loved to travel and spent many a vacation at the beach.
Flowers can be sent to the funeral home and donations can be sent to Rock Run United Methodist Church to the attention of Gayla Starr at 4114 Rock Run Road, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
