Doris Mellor

Doris “Dori” Marie Unverzagt Mellor, beloved mother and grandmother, bid us "fare thee well" on May 12, 2025, at the age of 95. She was lovingly known as Dori Mae to her late beloved parents Karl Charles William and Annie Dohrman Unverzagt.

Born on December 16, 1929, in Catonsville, Maryland, she was raised on her father’s dairy farm on the property of Spring Grove State Mental Hospital. She was of tough German lineage and a wise soul, an endless source of knowledge on birds and wildlife, an avid reader, loved to knit and crochet, was a poet, loved leading Bible studies for the Daytimer's at church, and a meticulous proofreader.

Dori raised her brood as a single parent and is survived by her daughters Sallie Jean Gartside (Michael Anthony), Cathy Anne Stilwell (Don-deceased), and Car0l Lee Mellor, granddaughter Kimberley Anne Wingate (Justin Thomas) and great-grandchildren Payton Camron-Hailey Wingate and Nathaniel Tyler Wingate. Dori is predeceased by her son Keith William Mellor and infant daughter Laura Ann Mellor.

Her German heritage was obvious in her deeply ingrained pursuit of knowledge. She obtained her two master's degrees from Towson State and Johns Hopkins Universities. Dori also did graduate work at St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute. She started her teaching career with Baltimore County Public Schools in 1952 as a math and science teacher, switching to teaching English in 1965. She retired from Baltimore County Public Schools as a Supervisor of English. As one never to stay still long she went on to be the Upper School Head at Maryvale Preparatory School.

A memorial service will be held at The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd in Bel Air, Maryland in the near future on a date to be announced.
