Obituary

Don Vaught, age 87, of Abingdon, Maryland, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, on his 87th birthday.

Born in Rugby, Virginia, Donald was the beloved son of the late James Curtis Vaught and the late Sybil Marie Vaught, née Gaultney.

Donald was a hardworking and respected businessman whose career reflected his dedication and leadership. He worked for the Bata Shoe Company for more than 25 years, beginning as a factory worker and rising through the ranks to become Plant Manager in Salem, Indiana, and later in Elkins, West Virginia. Alongside his beloved wife, Wayna, he went on to own and operate two successful pest control businesses, Best Pest Control out of their home in Long Bar Harbor and Abingdon Exterminators.

A man who enjoyed serving both his community and those around him, Don was an active member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Elks Club, and Eagles Club. Through his involvement with the Rotary Club, he had the opportunity to spend six memorable weeks in India, an experience he treasured for the friendships he made and the memories he created.

Don loved spending time outdoors and especially enjoyed trout fishing at Rocks State Park and Deer Creek, as well as crabbing on the Bush River. He was an avid gardener, loved water skiing, and possessed a remarkable wealth of knowledge. Whether discussing history, current events, business, or the outdoors, Don could carry on a conversation about nearly any subject and genuinely enjoyed sharing what he knew with others.

Above all, Don cherished his family and the life he shared with his beloved wife, Wayna. Their partnership extended beyond marriage into business, community involvement, and the many adventures they enjoyed together.

Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nellie Wayna Kitts Vaught; his father, James Curtis Vaught; and his mother, Sybil Marie Vaught, née Gaultney.

He is survived by his daughter, Cathy (Chester) Whitten of Joppa, MD; his grandsons, Donald (Regina) Neuer and David (Theresa) Neuer; his great-grandchildren, Ariana, Roman, and Nikolas; his brother, James (Marian) Vaught of Edgewood, MD; and several nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly.
