David A. Martell, age 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Towson, Maryland.
Born in Stratford, Canada, David was the beloved son of the late Albert Arthur Charles Martell and the late Jean (Binnington) Martell. He immigrated to the United States from Canada as a teenager and went on to build a fulfilling life centered around education, hard work, family, and service to his church and community.
David was a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio and dedicated 30 years of his professional life to teaching mathematics in Baltimore County. He was an exceptionally intelligent man who took pride in his work and commitment to education. Following his retirement from teaching, he continued working for another 10 years as a house painter.
An avid golfer, David enjoyed spending time on the golf course. He was also passionate about hockey, both as a player and a spectator, and gardening was another of his favorite pastimes. He took great pride in his impressive vegetable garden, which measured approximately 50 by 100 feet and was filled with vegetables and flowers. David loved preserving the fruits of his labor by canning his homegrown vegetables, and he even made his own sauerkraut.
David's faith was an important part of his life. He was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church in Forest Hill, where he was elected to serve in parish leadership as registrar and junior warden of the vestry. His commitment to his church community was a meaningful part of his life and legacy.
David will be remembered for his intelligence, dedication, industrious nature, and the many interests that brought him joy throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley J. Martell; his son, Craig Martell; his daughter-in-law Annette; his brother, Paul Martell; his granddaughter Raeanne; and extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
