D. BREECE NELSON, age 80, of Bel Air, died in Harford Memorial Hospital on December 30, 2002. Born in Volney, Virginia, he was the son of the late Conley Irwin and Mamie Lea Young Nelson. He moved with his family to Harford County in 1930, where he was a farmer as a young man. He graduated from Bel Air High School in 1942 where he won the Hyde-Hopkins Award for best male athlete. He played baseball, soccer, and basketball and was a member of the Penn Championship relay team 1941 – 1942. He served his country in the Marine Corps during WW II. Upon leaving the military service he went to Rising Sun where he worked for Southern States until 1964 when he returned to Bel Air still with Southern States. In Rising Sun he coached little league baseball teams and served as a commissioner for the town. He returned to Harford County and was with Southern States until he retired in 1986. He continued to coach little league in Bel Air. He was a member of the Lions Club of Rising Sun and later in Bel Air. He was also a member of the American Legion in Rising Sun and Bel Air. He was an avid golfer, a member of the Maryland Golf and Country Club and a charter member of the Myrtle Beach Golf Club. He loved family, friends, sports, and children.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife Zenna M. DeBoard Nelson; two sons, D. Breece Nelson, Jr. of Fallston; Eric J. Nelson of North Wales, Pennsylvania; one brother, E. Cole Nelson of Darlington; two sisters, Henrietta Weaver of Virginia; Audrey West of Bel Air; four grandchildren, Jonathan W. Nelson of Fallston; Zachary W. Nelson of Fallston; Calista C. Nelson of North Wales, Pennsylvania; and Sarah W. Nelson of North Wales, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one daughter, Deborah Anne Nelson.
