Claudia Perry Sconion

September 23, 1948 — August 4, 2025

Claudia Perry Sconion, age 76, of Joppa, Maryland, passed away with her family beside her on August 4, 2025. Born in Hertford County, North Carolina, Claudia was the daughter of the late Archie Gordan Perry and Claudine (Peele) Perry.

A Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) retiree with more than 35 years in the classroom at Edgewood High School (EHS) and additional years at Fallston High School (FHS), Claudia was a true educator in all aspects of life. As a teacher, she took on the role of advocate, counselor, sponsor and so much more in addition to teaching a variety of courses, including business law, economics, typing and others. She knew how important experiences outside of the classroom were to holistic education and moderated programs like the stock market game, the mock trial program and more. Whatever her students and those in the greater community needed, she was committed to providing. This included starting a mentoring program for young, Black males at EHS in the 1990s, well before the national plea for greater support for this demographic was even discussed. In this program, she worked collaboratively to pair professional males from all industries (business, education, STEM, various trades, etc.) in the local community with male students at EHS. The program, especially the mentors, helped them to see what they could be with the right attitude and hard work. This mentoring program is still in place today and has resulted in countless lifelong relationships/mentorships, internships for students, job offers for graduates, etc. Claudia was thrilled to see her former students now serving as mentors in the program to pay it forward as she had always encouraged them to do.

Her passion for pouring into others was evident in her +40 year career as a Realtor® as well. Claudia took great pride in not only helping people find their dream homes but also educating those interested in first-time home ownership about the process and benefits. She patiently walked them through the preparatory steps and homebuying process. Claudia also served as a mentor to other realtors, supporting and celebrating their successes as well. Members of the Diana/Weichert team became extended family.

Outside of her professional life, Claudia was an active member of Mountain Christian Church where she served on the greeting team, greeting everyone with her beautiful smile on Sunday mornings. A Golden Life Member, Claudia spearheaded chartering the Harford County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (HCAC-DST) with 14 other members of the Sorority in 1979. She loved her DST and the positive community impact that HCAC-DST has always made, especially in supporting youth programming and scholarships for local students. She volunteered with the American Red Cross for more than 25 years, regularly encouraging friends and family members to sign up to donate blood during her volunteer hours. Claudia was a Life Member of the NAACP. She was also an active member of the Board for Edgewood High School’s Academy of Finance until her passing.

Claudia received her undergraduate degree from Saint Augustine’s in Raleigh, NC. She went on to receive an MS in Economics from Johns Hopkins University.

Claudia is preceded in death by her parents, baby sister, Della (Perry) Eley, and oldest brother, John Perry.

There is nothing Claudia loved more than spending time with her family. From family celebrations to sporting events for her grandsons, she was sure to be there with a smile and ready to hear some good music. She is survived by her three children, Keisha Nandalal (Bhall), Kira Sconion and Keith Sconion; grandsons Marco Nandalal, Mario Nandalal, Keith (KJ) Sconion and Eli Sconion; sister Rosa Perry and brother Archie (Jr.) Perry (Tiny) and a host of cousins, nephews and other loved ones.

She will be deeply missed. Her legacy of independence and positive community impact lives on in all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Edgewood High School’s Academy of Finance: https://form.jotform.com/harfordeducation/academy-of-finance
