Charles "Reed" Magness, Sr.

Charles “Reed” Magness, Sr., age 92 of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania passed away on December 6, 2023. A lifelong resident of Harford County, Reed was born in Bel Air, Maryland and was the son of the late Samuel Sappington Magness and Helen (Coale) Clark. Reed graduated from Bel Air High School in 1948, Loyola College in 1952, and was married to the love of his life Barbara Swain Magness for 56 years, until her passing in 2015. Reed farmed with his brothers in the Bel Air area until 1961 during which he was active with the 4-H and he was a member of the Emmorton Grange. He worked for the federal government at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a Chemist and Environmental Scientist for over 30 years, retiring in 1993. After his retirement from federal service, Reed worked for Sci-Tech corp. in Abingdon, MD until 1999 and was an active member and officer of the National Association of Retired Employees (NARF). Reed was a dedicated family man who enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams and supporting his children and grandchildren’s activities. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles who treasured traveling and spending time at the beach with his wife and family and woodworking.

Charles is survived by his daughter, Catherine (Kate) M. Young and her husband Edward Young of Jarrettsville, MD; two sons, Charles (Skip) Reed Magness, Jr. of Crownsville, MD and Mark C. Magness of Bel Air, MD; seven grandchildren Brad and Brian Young, Philip, Jenna, Sean, Gabrielle, and Charles Magness and two great grandchildren, Brantley, and William.

In addition to his parents and wife, Reed was preceded in death by son David A. Magness, sister, Irene Peeples and brothers, Henry, Timothy, Vernon, William, and Samuel.
