Carolyn Ross Youngberg

March 5, 1933 — July 20, 2025

Carolyn Ross Youngberg, 5 March 1933- 20 July 2025, Born in Raleigh, NC to William Ross and Velma Asenath (Wheeler) Kelly.

Carolyn attended Patterson Park High School and graduated from Towson State Teacher’s College in 1955. At a Baltimore USO dance, she met Dean Youngberg, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. They married in 1956 and moved to Iowa, where Carolyn taught elementary school while Dean attended Iowa State University. After his graduation they returned to Maryland and Carolyn began a busy life raising four daughters. Her seamstress skills came in handy as she sewed her own clothes and a variety of outfits for her daughters, including baby clothes, Easter coats, formal dresses and wedding gowns.

Being involved in community and church was important to Carolyn. She continued her love of teaching by substituting at local schools and tutoring for HCCC’s Adult Basic Education Program. As a dedicated church member, she volunteered in youth activities, assisted with Camp Wo-Me-To retreats, helmed the kitchen brigade and prepared countless meals. She loved music, old hymns and playing the piano. For more than 50 years she sang joyously in the choir.

Dean and Carolyn built their home in Churchville, MD in 1972. It quickly became the gathering spot for family events. Their bountiful garden provided blueberries, grapes, vegetables, and flowers that they always generously shared with family and friends. With such a nurturing spirit, feisty sense of humor, generosity, quiet strength and strong faith, Carolyn lovingly raised a family, doted on grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and touched many lives and hearts.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dean, daughters Janis Kirk, Linda (Kenneth) Solow, Karen (David) Kilby, Donna (Dominic) Amoroso, Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family include Erica (Scott) Kalman & Chase, Cole, Carson; Shawn (Jenna) Kilby; Collyn Kilby; Connor Kilby; Daniel (Sarah) Solow & Cameron; Carly Solow; Josh (Casey) Amoroso & Stella; Jake (Katie) Amoroso & William. She is also survived by her sister Barbara (Russell) Horsley and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, sister Velma Joan Kelly, brother William Kelly, Jr., and his wife Joan Anne, and son-in-law Sherman Kirk.
