Barbara J. Workinger, age 83, of Edgewood, Maryland, passed away peacefully in Newark, Delaware, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late Grove Andrew Hoover and Ruby Mae (Wentz) Hoover.
Barbara shared a loving marriage with her husband, Gerard Francis Workinger, whom she married in 1963. Their marriage was built on love, devotion, and family. Gerard was truly her world, and together they created a beautiful life and raised a wonderful family. Barbara was a dedicated stay-at-home mother who devoted her life to caring for those she loved. As each of her parents aged, she lovingly cared for them and later became the devoted caregiver to her husband during his illness. She was an exceptional caregiver whose selflessness, strength, and unwavering dedication touched the lives of everyone around her.
Known for being feisty, funny, genuine, and refreshingly honest, Barbara had a special way of energizing every room she entered. She took pride in caring for her home and family and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. She was a talented and creative woman who enjoyed sewing, crafting, reading, and custom-making cards and envelopes to give as gifts. She loved keeping her hands busy with creative projects and found great joy in sharing her creations with others.
Barbara also enjoyed visiting with loved ones, playing cards (her favorites were Kings in the Corner and Uno), and working on her special projects. Above all, she treasured family gatherings and the countless memories made with those she loved most. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose love and dedication helped build a beautiful family and lasting legacy.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Suzanne (Jerome) Schafer; her son, Gary Lee (Robin) Workinger; her eight beloved grandchildren; and her brother, Glenn “Butch” (Barbara) Hoover. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
