William O. Hanle

July 20, 1921 — November 14, 2003

WILLIAM O. HANLE, age 82, of Joppa, died in Oak Crest Village, Baltimore on November 14, 2003. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Carl and Charlotte Hessler Hanle, and the husband of the late Marie Rose Hanle. A resident of Harford County since 1963, Mr. Hanle was a career Army Officer (CAPT. Ret) and served his country in the U.S. Army during both WW II and the Korean Conflict. During WW II he was a First Lieutenant and combat engineer with the 82nd Airborne (the All-American Division) and participated in combat jumps on D-Day in Normandy and in Holland. He also fought and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He received two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and numerous campaign and commendation medals for service during his active military career. After retirement from the Army, he worked for the Department of the Treasury as an Internal Affairs Agent from 1963-78. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and volunteered at the Maryland School for the Blind in Baltimore where he was known affectionately by his students as “Mr. Bill”. His family said he was a devoted husband and father.

Mr. Hanle is survived by two sons, W. Scott Hanle and his wife, Jane Hanle of Southlake, Texas; Craig R. Hanle and his wife, Susan Hanle of Edgewood; one daughter, Dianne P. Florio and her husband, Harry Florio of Ocean City, Maryland; one sister, Charlotte Meyers of Clifton Park, New York; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
