Viola was born on February 23,1923, in Bay Minette, Alabama to William and Artizia Hale Lamberth. The youngest of 10 children, Viola spent her days playing and working on the family farm. At 18, Viola left the farm to attend nursing school in Mobile AL, where shortly after completion she joined the US Army entering with the rank of Second Lieutenant. Her basic training was at Fort Rucker AL, and then she was stationed at Fort McPherson, GA tending to the needs of the injured soldiers returning statewide.

While stationed at Fort McPherson she met her future husband Frank Chismar in 1947. They had whirlwind romance and were married just 3 months after meeting. Shortly after getting married, she resigned from the Army with the rank of First Lieutenant and worked as civilian nurse at various hospitals including Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda, MD then eventually left nursing to concentrate on being a full-time housewife and mom.  After moving around from Army base to Army base Viola and Frank settled in Woodbridge NJ in 1957.
