Sally Ann Greene

August 24, 1933 — May 17, 2022

Sally Ann Jackson Greene daughter of the late Samuel and Mabel Jackson was born on August 24, 1933, in Harford County, Maryland. She departed this life on May 17, 2022, at her home on Cooptown Road, Forest Hill, Maryland.

She attended Bel Air Colored High School and on June 15, 1951, graduated from Central Consolidated High School of Harford County.  In 1955 she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Bowie State College and eventually received her Master’s degree in Education.  A 64-year marriage to Calvin Greene began in 1955.

Sally’s teaching career began in 1955 at Central Consolidated School, taught at Jarrettsville Elementary School and North Harford Middle School, retiring in 1988. Harford County Public Schools inducted her into the Hall of Fame in 2006.  Over the years many children were mentored by Sally.  She gave care and learning to numerous children during her life.  Sally was secretary and bookkeeper for Greene’s Garage, Forest Hill, MD.  She also helped clean buses and did other duties.

As a dedicated member of Fairview A.M.E. Church, Sally donated much of her time to the church.  The ministries she was a member of included the Steward Board, Stewardess Board, Women’s Missionary Society, Senior Choir, Sunday School teacher, Lay Organization, and the Kitchen Committee.  The offices she held within the church included church secretary, quarterly conference secretary, superintendent of the church school and editor of the church bulletin.  She also mentored church stewards.  Sally and her husband voluntarily mowed the church lawn and kept the landscape beautiful.   She always did the holiday décor in the church.  Sally always gave school supplies, snacks and plenty of candy to children, particularly during holidays.

After passing various required stations, Sally became the Worthy Matron of Venus Chapter 56 of the Eastern Star.  She served in that leadership position many times over the years.  When not leading the chapter, she was one of the Past Matrons for her Chapter and served on many committees.  She served on the district level as a Past District Deputy Grand Matron for District 7.  District 7 has 5 chapters within Harford and Baltimore Counties.

One of her hobbies is sewing.  After retirement, Sally used her sewing talent at Hirsch's Men’s Store in Bel Air.  She loved family and friend gatherings and especially loved her yearly event, "The Calendar Tea."  Once a year, she enjoyed the casinos in Delaware and New Jersey and walked along the Atlantic City, NJ boardwalk.  While strolling along the boardwalk she was surprised to find a pizza carryout called "Sally".   She would eat her slice of pizza, sit on a park bench and laugh at the crowd all around her.  Calvin and Sally regularly drove a convertible car in Havre de Grace’s 4th of July parade in support of Black Youth in Action’s Debutante Ball.  She also accompanied her husband as he drove a convertible in the Bel Air 4th of July parade.

Sally is the youngest of seven sisters and two brothers all of whom are deceased. Her husband, Mr. Calvin Greene, preceded her in death in 2018. She is survived by a son, Robert Greene, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
