R. Walter Ward

d. February 16, 2003

R. WALTER WARD, 78, of Abingdon died at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center on February 16, 2003. Born in Boone, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Walter L. and Eliza Yates Ward. Mr. Ward and his now deceased business partner, Melvin G. Bosely, formed the most prestigious real estate organization of Ward and Bosely Real Estate in Harford County. Their efforts created many well planned neighborhoods in Harford County today, including Howard Park, Wakefield Meadows, Glenwood Country Club Park, Box Hill North and South and Edgewood Meadows. Later, they did commercial areas including, Box Hill Square Shopping Center, Bel Air South Professional Center, Box Hill South Corporate Center and Festival at Bel Air. There is hardly a development of any type, residential or commercial, from the town of Bel Air to the Bush River that does not have his name in land exchange, sale of homes, or development of commercial areas. In addition to this real estate organization, R. Walter “served” two terms as Harford County Board of Realtors. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League, the Rotary, and Board of Directors of First National Bank of Maryland. He was proclaimed a Harford County Living Treasure in 2000.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Beatrice “Betty” L. Lauterbach Ward; a son, Bob Ward of Darlington; a daughter, Jennifer Ward Reynolds of Phoenix; a brother, Fred Y. Ward of Bel Air; a sister, Mary Helen Cooper of Harker Heights, Texas; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Ward, Laura Ann Ward and Robert Andrew Ward, all of Darlington. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ward was predeceased by four brothers, Howard Ward, Frank Ward, Edward Ward and John Ward, a sister, Jessie Morrison, and a step-mother, Gertrude Ward.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Harford Community College Scholarship Fund, 401 Thomas Run Road, Bel Air, MD 21015 in Memory of Walter Ward.
