Newton Magaha

May 13, 1921 — December 25, 2021

Newton M. Magaha of Bel Air, MD, passed away December 25, 2021. He was 100 years old.


Born in West Virginia, Mr. Magaha was the son of the late John Henry Magaha and Margaret Ann Elizabeth Myers Magaha.  His beloved wife of 72 years, Helen R. Magaha, passed in 2019.


Mr. Magaha had owned and operated several grocery businesses in West Virginia and Frederick, MD for over 20 years. After moving from Walkersville, MD in 1966 to Denton, MD, Mr. Magaha was employed by the USDA and was also a Catalog Agency owner in Denton.


Mr. Magaha served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater in WWII as an aviation electrician aboard the USS Lexington.  He was a member of the Greensboro, MD VFW Post 7937 and the Caroline American Legion Post 29 in Denton.  He was also a member of the Malta Lodge #80 in West Virginia, the Caroline Chapter #62, O.E.S. in Denton, and other Masonic bodies.  Mr. Magaha was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Denton.  After moving to Bel Air, MD he attended Oak Grove Baptist Church and was a member of Fallston United Methodist Church.   He cherished the friends and fellowship of all his church family.  Mr. Magaha was very accomplished in wood working and carpentry and he loved to dance, especially with his favorite partner, Helen.


Mr. Magaha is survived by a son, David N. Magaha and his wife, Janet of Lewes, DE; two daughters, M. Susan Melvin of Auburn, CA and Mary M. Frazier and husband Robert of Bel Air, MD. ; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great- great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. 


Mr. Magaha is preceded in death by a granddaughter Collen Magaha and thirteen brothers and sisters: Edward, Margaret, Mary, Francis, Gerald, Doris, Eunice, Charlotte, Kathleen, Bettie, Elizabeth, William and Glenn.


A memorial service will be announced in the future.


If friends wish to send a memorial donation in memory of Mr. Magaha, the family suggests sending them to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Philadelphia, Pa. or Fallston United Methodist Church, Fallston, Md.
