Marvel L. Winskowski

November 25, 1931 — December 2, 2018

Marvel L. Winskowski, age 87, of Jarrettsville, MD, passed peacefully on December 2, 2018. Born on November 25, 1931 in his parents’ home on Charles Street, he was the son of Litha A. and William R. Winskowski. He grew up on a farm on North Bend Road and attended Jarrettsville Elementary and High School. Marvel married his wife Polly (Sadler) Winskowski on November 27, 1954. He is survived by his wife, daughter Betty Burcham (Richard), two grandchildren Richard Burcham, Jr. (Carrie) and Danielle Kress (Karl), and two great-granddaughters Carlee Burcham and Morgan Kress. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Carl Winskowski and sister Catherine Beyer.

Marvel was well known in the community for his construction business. He built, remodeled, and restored many homes, churches, and stores in Jarrettsville and the neighboring areas, including St. Paul’s Lutheran Church School in Kingsville and Bircham’s store in Jarrettsville. He was an active member of the Jarrettsville Lions Club since 1956 and proud to have started the Jarrettsville Carnival in 1969, a cherished community event still occurring today. He had perfect attendance to Lions Club meetings for more than 50 years and earned the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2003. In 2017, Marvel received the Harford Living Treasure designation for lifetime dedication to the community.

Marvel joined the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company in 1955 and served 20 years as a fireman. For 35 years, he was part of a bowling league in Harford County. He served in the U.S. Army 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War, 1952-1954, earning a Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and Bronze Star Medal for meritorious military service.

Marvel was an outdoorsman who loved hunting, especially at the Pine Tree Hunt Club where he was a long-standing member. He enjoyed gardening and growing vegetables for his family and neighbors, and he loved country music, bluegrass, and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
